The Next Five Years
The Next Five Years
During my time at the WIPRO MSUrbanStem program I have evolved much as an educator. When I began the program I was focused on enhancing my instruction through the use of technology. Little did I know how transformational the program would become in terms of my outlook and goals. Technology played a huge role in the program, but as a vehicle for the goals I wished to achieve. One of the goals I am seeking to achieve by implementing my ImagineIT project is to have my students become reflective learners who take ownership of their education. Thereby internalizing what they learn and becoming an activist for their future. This goal is key to all disciplines. Students who are ‘aware’ of their educational landscape are more likely to show grit and self-regulation.
My ImagineIT has become a labor of love. I continue to try to enable my students to envision their role in the educational process by pushing them to become more reflective. I believe when a student becomes reflective about what they are learning, they ask thought-provoking questions. They reflect on the purpose of instruction as well as the delivery. This in turn, enables students to learn more about their own learning characteristics and what type of instruction benefits them most. This is where I am looking to anticipate change.
This program has inspired me to take a more active role in the lives of the students I serve as well as in the direction education is taking as a whole. My ImagineIT project allows me to work with each student in the sense of the ‘big picture’ of where they fit into the educational process. I am also considering taking on a more public role in voicing opposition to the era of big data in education, where often students are considered numbers, we have lost the personal side of education. I plan to ensure that students are seen as the unique individuals they are.
